The 2010-11 hockey season isn’t over yet – at least for one member of the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings.
The Wheat Kings have confirmed that 19-year old center Scott Glennie will join the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League for the balance of the regular season and playoffs.
Glennie, who finished second in team scoring this season with a career high 91 points including 35 goals, was chosen by the Dallas Stars in the first round (8th overall) of the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He signed with the Stars last summer.
A 4-year Western League veteran, the 6’2” 192 lb Winnipeg product led Brandon in playoff scoring this spring with three goals and 10 points in six games as the Wheat Kings fell to the Medicine Hat Tigers in their best of seven opening round playoff series.
A former second round bantam draft choice of the Wheat Kings, Glennie played in 252 career games for the Wheat Kings and became the first Brandon player since Marty Murray in 1994 to eclipse the 300-point plateau when he reached the milestone in March.
Glennie is one of only eleven players to score over 300 career points in franchise history, joining the likes of Brian Propp (511), Ray Allison (476), Ron Chipperfield (470), Bill Derlago (437), Kelly Glowa (424), Dale McMullin (418), Murray (392), Byron Lomow (347), Rick Blight (336) and Danny Bonar (312).
During his illustrious Wheat King career, Glennie scored 121 goals and 308 points. In 39 playoff games with Brandon, he had ten goals and 39 points – good for 15th place on the club’s all time list.
With the Stars, he’s joining a team – coached by former Wheat King center Glen Gulutzan – that is currently 40-26-10 on the season and sitting in third place in the AHL’s Western Division.
Glennie is expected to join the Stars in time for Wednesday night’s game against the Peoria Rivermen.
The curtain came down on the Wheat Kings’ playoff run Monday night at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg with a 7-5 loss to the Tigers in game six.
I remember the scouting report on him when the Stars picked him, the one knock against him was that he wasn't much of a back-checker, wonder if it was accurate in the first place and whether it has changed. Either way, I'm excited to see this kid play.
