Stars Send Sawada to St. Johns, Pick Up Two Players in Return

The Dallas Stars have reassigned winger Ray Sawada to the AHL's St. John's IceCaps. Sawada, who has missed much of the season with two separate injuries, was slated to play his first game in over January 13th. Technically, Dallas still owns the rights to Sawada in the NHL. There is a possibility that Dallas feels that his development would be better served in St. Johns. Alternately, Dallas could feel that the return they got (two players) was better than having Sawada for the last 21 games of the season.

Those returns are two players from St. Johns. The first, Michael Forney, is in a similar situation to Sawada: his contract is still owned by Winnipeg and expires after this season. He has played most of the season in the ECHL with Colorado, where he racked up 16-26-42 in 49 games. The second, Shawn Weller, was traded in a technically separate transaction between the AHL clubs. Weller is 10-14-24 in 41 games with St. John's. He was traded for future considerations.

None of the three players will be active in tonight's action.
