TSN Steals Work From Texas Stars ATO Taylor Vause

UPDATE: Somewhat of a success! Thanks to everyone's comments and tweets, TSN has posted another copy of the image with the proper credit to their Facebook page. However, the original still exists without any credit attribution.

The new digital age is somewhat confusing for a lot of "big" media outlets. However, if there's one thing that is a cornerstone of good journalism no matter the medium, it's attribution of source material and request for use of said material. That is where TSN failed this weekend. Plain and simple, they stole one of Taylor Vause's awesome Photoshops posted here and placed it on their Facebook page with absolutely no attribution or request for the content.

Several people have pointed out that the material is stolen and yet it still remains on their page with no comment from the page administrators (this has changed a bit, see update above). Take a look at the image on Vause's imgur album. TSN even cropped out his name, which was clearly in the bottom right corner.

Taylor is now aware of the theft, thanks to Erin Bolen and Graham Jenkins tweeting with me about it last night. If you have a second, I'd recommend going to the Facebook page and commenting on the photo, asking why they didn't credit Vause for his work. You can also tweet at them @TSN_sports. Link to this blog post in your tweets and messages so that it's glaringly obvious that the work is the same. (No need for this now that it's resolved.)

You can't spell stolen without T-S-N.

  1. Hey guys - we received the picture from someone who works here who thought it was a cool image. We posted it to our page to share with our fans.

We have re-posted it with credit to Taylor and a link to his work (provided in this article)as well as acknowledging that we did NOT create that image.

    1. Thank you for doing the right thing.

Can you change the credit on the original image though?

  2. Hey guys,

Seems to be a misunderstanding. Taylor had been contacted prior to the photo being published about the use of it. He was cool with it and we're going to give him a twitter shout out when we tweet the pic.

    He's a talented guy!

    1. He is talented; we agree.

There seems to be some confusion on whether this was a mistake or if you asked Taylor or not. Which one is right?

Just being honest is what counts now.

  3. Image was never stolen. This Blog is not good journalism. Do your research. Im sure you have rights to that logo at the top of your page too!

    1. I am credentialed with the AHL and the Texas Stars. The Texas Stars have never had a problem with my logo, which I created.

Use without attribution is stealing. Just say you made a mistake and be done with it. No need for ad hominem attacks.

    1. TO be clear, I removed one of my comments, as I hit enter before I was done. I have never deleted user comments on this blog.

  6. Being credentialed does not give you the right to use their logo. Thats a fact. You should remove it.

  7. You stole their logo to make you look more proffesional. When in truth you are nothing but a thief.

  8. As long as your aritcle and words of slander remain up, you should consider that everything you put up in the same context. So to call one person a thief without doing your research, then claim because you are credentialed you can use the logo at the top of your page is very hypocritical. That's probably why you don't get any real work as a sport reporter. Delete what you don't want to see and 'blog' about what you see fit. Learn some professionalism before you post and remove slander when it is undeserved.

  10. Does TSN know what a whiny (not to mention cowardly) little thing you are, "Anonymous", and how bad you're making them look? Even if you had Vause's permission to use the picture, not giving him credit is irresponsible, tacky, and just plain sloppy journalism. And attacking Stephen with the ridiculous accusation that he doesn't have permission to use the logo he created, which is his own intellectual property? Wow.

You did something wrong, and you were called on it. Now you're behaving like a 12 year old. Stop it. Act like a man, acknowledge what you did and apologize, and stop dragging Stephen through the mud because you're pissed off he outted you.

At least this is decent off-season entertainment...

  11. Wow...well I'd say only one person looks unprofessional here and it's not Stephen. Also, speaking of not checking facts first, the 100degreehockey logo is not anywhere close to "stolen" from any of the Texas Stars logos.

  12. I know for a fact that Taylor was not contacted prior to the posting of his image and did not give permission or was "cool" with anything. That was a lie. However we are moving on and hopefully more people can notice his tremendous work and get his name out there. And he also is an unreal hockey player. Chips pucks gets them deep.
