Texas Loses the Rematch 3-2 in Grand Rapids

This time around, it was the Griffins who got the better of Texas. After falling 3-1 twenty-four hours ago, Grand Rapids defeated the Stars 3-2 in the rematch tonight at Van Andel Arena. Texas got goals from Matt Fraser and Colton Sceviour and 31 saves on 34 shots against Jack Campbell. The Stars were a perfect 3/3 on the PK but did not register a power play goal themselves either, despite two chances in the third period to tie it with the man advantage.

Grand Rapids drew first blood in tonight's match. Taking advantage of a Stars giveaway just off the faceoff led to Francis Pare's ninth of the season and 1-0 Griffins advantage.

The Stars answered back twice in the period, however. Coming off a penalty kill, Max Fortunus sent a shot-pass toward the net that found Matt Fraser behind Petr Mrazek, allowing a practically empty net goal for the second year winger. Fraser contributed on the next goal as well, dishing to Colton Sceviour. His goal was the third in four games and extended a four game point streak. Texas would end period up 2-1 despite at 11-10 shot deficit.

The second period was all Griffins as the Detroit farmhands went ahead 3-2 thanks to goals from Brian Lashoff and Triston Grant. Lashoff's goal bounced off a Stars defender before going in. Triston Grant's goal appeared to need a review at first, possibly going in off his hand, but the referee decided to go with the call on the ice and not employ the relatively-new AHL review system. Shots were 12-8 in the period for GR and 23-18.

Despite two power play chances in the final period, Texas could not find the equalizer in the frame. The loss breaks up Texas's three game win streak and sets them at 9-8-1-1 for the season.

The Stars travel overnight to Peoria for an afternoon game against the Rivermen on Sunday.
