Dallas Recalls Jordie Benn, Still Leaves Ten D in Texas

A brief note this morning that Dallas has recalled Jordie Benn. The blue liner played in all three games this weekend for Texas. This still leaves the AHL side with ten healthy defensemen. Decision abound before tomorrow's trade/movement deadline for the AHL.

Here's the release:
The Texas Stars, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the Dallas Stars, announced today that Dallas has recalled defenseman Jordie Benn from Texas.

Benn, 25, has posted 21 points (7G-14A) with 33 penalty minutes in 43 games for Texas this season. The Victoria, B.C., native has appeared in 23 games with Dallas during the 2012-13 campaign, notching six points (1G-5A) with 10 penalty minutes. Earlier this season, Benn recorded his first career NHL goal on March 23 against the Colorado Avalanche. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound defenseman went undrafted and was signed by Dallas on July 25, 2012 to a one-year contract extension.

  1. Any predictions? Is Jordie's call-up a temporary one or will he miss the AHL playoffs? I ticked off all of the players who were on the ice this weekend, but didn't see any clear "losers" in the D-man shuffle. I'm assuming that we're keeping Fortunus and Oleksiak, Wrenn, Sneep, and Sloan have been solid all season. The new guys are still a big unknown with no real time to work them in. I kind of expect Gaunce and Connauton to be sent down.

  2. I have to say I disagree. Gaunce may be on the fence, but Connauton I believe stays. Nemeth, is he really healthy? Morrow is in the top 6, Commodore is a proven veteran. I am not sure that Wrenn and Sneep keep their playing time, but then again I think Labrie brings some physical play we can use. Steve

    1. I don't think Gaunce or Connauton go to the ECHL for sure. They are both AHL guys.

Nemeth is healthy but perhaps not ready for game speed contact.

Wrenn and Sneep would be the first scratches, likely.

  3. Will Jordie be gone for good or returned after Dallas is done with him?

    1. Dallas made an effort to make him playoff eligible, so he should be back.

  4. This is my first year enjoying hockey, so I don't know all of the finer points yet. Could someone please explain to me the details of the trade deadlines for the NHL and AHL so I can sound like less of an idiot? I understand that the NHL deadline passed and that they moved Chiasson, Fraser, Benn, and Scevior down so we could use them in the Calder Cup, but what is the AHL deadline for?

  5. The AHL deadline is basically the same thing as the NHL deadline. After that point, they can no longer pick up new players via trade, ATO, PTO, loan, or call up (except for emergencies). Barring injury or illness, only the people on the "clear day roster" are eligible for the play offs.

  6. So what about Chiasson, Benn, and Fraser? Can they still get sent down after the deadline?

  7. Yes, they were on our roster in time. Although Texas still has to "claim" them on the "clear day roster", as I understand it.

Dallas can't send us Dillon, Roussell, Eakin, Wandell, Larsen, Bachman, or any of the others who may have played for us in the past, though. :(

  8. Ooooo... found an article that says "clear day rosters" are gone, if I'm reading it right. http://artfulpuck.wordpress.com/2013/01/29/ahl-clear-day-roster-rule-changes/

    1. You are correct. My apologies for not posting anything on this yet. Playoff eligibility rules have changed. There are no more clear day rosters.

It will function more like the ECHL where you submit a playoff roster at the end of the season. Post tomorrow to fully explain.

  9. Thanks so much everyone for clearing that up for me!
