Edmonton Claims Luke Gazdic on Waivers

The Texas Stars fifth season will be missing a key component as Luke Gazdic has been claimed off waivers by the Edmonton Oilers.  Gazdic will report to the NHL and could be playing against the Dallas Stars very soon.

The Oilers had a chance to see Gazdic up close on Friday, as he scored a goal in the Stars' 4-0 victory over Edmonton in OKC.

Everyone else placed on waivers yesterday for Dallas cleared. More information as we know it.

  1. Can you please explain what that means? I didn't have the experience of all of these camps and waivers last year when I got into hockey due to the lock-out.
Does that mean Gazdic is now part of the Oiler's association and is no longer with the Stars in any capacity?

  2. That's what it means. When a player is placed on waivers, any team can claim him. Usually they are placed on waivers with the intention of going down to the AHL team. Once they "clear waivers", they are officially back with the AHL team. So I think...Dallas placed him on waivers thinking he would clear and go back to Texas. Edmonton chose to claim him, though, and no more Gaz in Austin. :-(

    1. One more note is that when a player clears waivers, you don't have to assign them. They are free to be assigned at that time though.

  3. Thanks for the information and clarification! I'm sad to see him go, but it will be nice to see him in the big leagues, even if it is against us.

  4. What does this mean for Gazdic? Does that mean he's going to be playing for the Oilers, or can they assign him to the Barons? Doesn't seem right that they'd be able to do that without putting him on waivers themselves.

  5. Gazdic was claimed to be the Oilers tough guy after Steve MacIntyre (who was claimed from Pittsburgh) hurt his knee. The Oilers were vocal about needing a tough guy after Gagner had his jaw broken and Hall took an elbow to the head in the same preseason game. Gazdic will be on the Oilers roster to start the season, and should get some play time (the Oilers only have 13 fully healthy forwards).

  6. Gazdic had his first game tonight (1 Oct) for Edmonton. He got an assist, was +1 and won a fight in about 5 mins of ice time. He even managed to remove his own helmet for the fight without getting caught. You can see it on the hockeyfights website.

  7. I posted too soon. The NHL changed the scoring and Gazdic got credit for the Oilers first goal of the season, not the assist. An awesome first game for him.
