Texas Drops OT Game in Cleveland, 4-3

Another early deficit for Texas ended up putting them behind the eight ball all night. Lake Erie scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game. The Stars overcame the slow start thanks to a late 6-on-5 goal by Brett Ritchie but fell in overtime on a shot that beat Jack Campbell gloveside high.

Derek Meech had three assists in the game, his 400th in the AHL. John Klingberg picked up a goal and an assist. Jack Campbell got the start and stopped 20 of 24 shots.

The Stars got in trouble early for the second straight night against the Monsters. Joey Hishon scored his first of the season after Texas got caught on a line change and Hishon broke in alone. It was 1-0 at the two minute mark. Colin Smith got the 2-0 goal on just the second shot of the night two minutes after that. Within the first five minutes of the game, Texas was down 2-0 against the Monsters once again.

The Stars got a goal off their young defenseman, John Klingberg, as he drifted down low on a 4-on-4 situation and scored his third goal of the year. Derek Meech had the only Stars' assist. The score would end at 2-1 after twenty.

Lake Erie would go next, reclaiming their two-goal lead. Joey Hishon got his second of the night as he beat Jack Campbell to the post with the puck. The goal came on a delayed penalty, putting the advantage at 6-on-5.

Brendan Ranford would score his second of the season in the second period. The power play goal was assisted by Valeri Nichushkin, his first point in the AHL. Derek Meech assisted on the play as well, giving him two points in his 400th AHL game.

The Stars would pull Campbell with 90 seconds left in the third period. As Texas pressed the advantage, they earned a power play thanks to a trip. John Klingberg broke his stick on a slapshot, but Brett Ritchie collected the puck off the off-speed shot for the tie.

Schumacher's backhand in the OT period won the game for Lake Erie. Texas got a point but dropped to 4-1-2-0. Texas returns home to play Toronto on Wednesday.

  1. In not to many weeks we can see some threads blaming poor goaltending as the culprit, still early in the season but last time our best goaltender was ranked 50ish in the league people got fired and the team landed up being one of the worst in the league. Hopefully that doesn't happen though.

  2. I am more concerned about the horrible blue line play almost every single night. Our goaltending needs to be better but we have to stop giving up grade A chances. Not impressed right now with the way the new staff has our defensive unit playing. Giving up a pile of goals every night is not something we have seen here in the last couple years.

    1. I don't know, I haven't seen the road goals against so I can't say about those but I think the defense has been okay. At home or goaltenders gave up to many soft goals that an AHL (Quality) goaltender should stop. Throughout the vast portion of last season I was curious why Nilstorp was the clear #1 and I was under the impression (going into the season) they were a 1A and 1B thing, at least as it looks now, all-be-it early, Nilstorp was the clear #1.
