Campbell phenomenal against shot-heavy Rockford squad
Feeling the effects of a long 3-in-3 set and a bug that is ravaging the locker room, the Stars dropped the final game of the weekend set to drop to winless in four straight. Rockford controlled the play, absolutely carpet bombing netminder Jack Campbell with a total of 45 shots on net, including 21 in just the first period. Additionally, Texas only dressed 17 skaters, losing Greg Rallo and Kevin Henderson and only having Jesse Root on hand to replace them.
Matej Stransky scored his first of the year in the loss. Derek Hulak potted his fifth of the year as well. The Stars are now idle until Friday when they will face the current division leaders, the San Antonio Rampage, at the Cedar Park Center.
Jack Campbell kept things even in the first period with a massive number of high quality saves. The IceHogs bombed 21 shots on net in the first period alone. Campbell even got an old school two-pad stack in to deny the IceHogs their game-opening goal.
The barrage continued in the second period, but Texas would not weather the storm unscathed. Brandon Mashinter scored on the power play off a slick centering pass from highly-touted prospect Teuvo Teravainen.
Texas would answer with the first goal of the year for Czech-born Matej Stransky. It was a rebound goal effort by that line. Goalie Antii Raanta, who was just sent down by Chicago yesterday, got the first few shots but not the fourth and final one. Gemel Smith and Jesse Root assisted. It was Root's first career AHL point.
Teravainen worked his magic again just three minutes later as he found Garret Ross in the slot. Ross's shot beat Campbell for the 2-1 lead.
TJ Brennan, who assisted on the second Hogs goal, got one of his own in the third. At exactly the halfway point of the final frame, he crushed a pass from Mashinter put the lead at two.
With just over two minutes remaining in the third period, Jack Campbell headed to the bench for the extra attacker. Derek Hulak tipped home a Travis Morin shot almost immediately thereafter.
Texas would get a 6-on-4 chance with just under 7 seconds left but could not convert. They will return home to face San Antonio on Friday.

Only Jesse Root came in, leaving the team at 17.
Tonight's attendance was 6,390.
