After losing a couple of tough ones, the Texas Stars finished out their 3-in-3 with a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Wolves ensuring they wouldn’t leave Illinois empty-handed.
Jake Oettinger got the start in net and earned his second professional shutout to the tune of 32 saves. He was sublime when needed but Oettinger wasn’t overly taxed despite a high shot total. The performance was well-timed after the Stars were forced to chase the game in their previous two contests.
Strong special teams play helped the Stars cause in the first period. Michael Mersch opened the scoring with a power play goal seven minutes into the contest as Jason Robertson set up the play for the primary helper. The Stars earned five of their six power play opportunities in the first period, including two instances of 5-on-3.
Nick Caamano pushed the lead to two with a shorthanded goal in the last minute of the opening frame, making a nifty move on the breakaway and finishing with a backhander. Caamano had an interesting night as he traded fisticuffs with Tye McGinn and also collided awkwardly with a Wolves player in the third period. Caamano did not return to the bench after the play.
Less than three minutes into the second period, a slick centering feed from Adam Mascherin set up Brad McClure in the slot to conclude the scoring in the game.
One last item of intrigue in the Sunday matinee was a play from Joel Hanley. In the second period, he fired a shot from distance that clanged off the stanchion and nearly trickled in past Garrett Sparks. Interestingly, Hanley scored on that exact type of play last season against the Manitoba Moose, and the highlight went viral.
The Stars head back to Texas to take on the Rampage in San Antonio on Friday.
