Dallas Returns Dillon, Texas Signs Berube

Texas's defense situation got a heck of a lot better today with two defensemen coming into the fold. First, Dallas returned rookie blue liner Brenden Dillon after a short callup in which he was a healthy scratch in Dallas's loss to Detroit. Second, anticipating a need for more help on the backend, Texas announced the signing of Mike Berube to a professional tryout contract. Berube played with Texas in the preseason and was with the Allen Americans until this afternoon.

Berube is 2-7-9 in 29 games with Allen this season. He has previously played at the AHL level with Hartford and in the ECHL with Charlotte. He may or may not get into a game with Texas as there are now seven on the roster. Depending on what he shows in practice, he could always get a shot similar to what Jordie Benn got in Dallas last night. We haven't seen Coach Pyle dress seven defensemen yet this season, but it was a common occurrence for Coach Gulutzan. It's always possible, but I think unlikely.

Here's the release:
The Dallas Stars announced on Wednesday that the club has assigned defenseman to the Texas Stars, Dallas' primary affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). In addition, the Texas Stars announced on Wednesday that the club has signed defenseman Mike Berube to a PTO (professional tryout agreement).

Dillon, 21, has played in 31 games for Texas, scoring two goals and 11 assists for 13 points and 34 penalty minutes. He was signed to a three-year contract as a free agent on March 3, 2011. The 6-2, 198-pound defenseman played in 72 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL last season, scoring eight goals and 51 assists for 59 points.

Berube comes to Texas from the Allen Americans, Texas’ Central Hockey League affiliate. The defenseman has two goals and nine points in 29 games with Allen this season. In 2009-10, Berube played for the Hartford Wolf Pack, going scoreless in four AHL games. The Edmonton, AB, native is in his third pro season, suiting up in 164 pro games between Allen, Hartford and Charlotte (ECHL). The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder played his junior hockey in the WHL for Vancouver, Red Deer and Prince George.
