Texas Stars Announce Training Camp Roster, Surprising Tryout Players

The Texas Stars released the list of players expected to report today at 5 PM to the Cedar Park Center for training camp. First on-ice activities will happen tomorrow afternoon. Several Stars already in town have been using the ice this week to get a head start on camp activities.

The biggest surprise on the list is Cam Barker, a 296-game NHL veteran. His contract expired at the end of last season with Edmonton. He is with the Stars as a training camp tryout. Barker last played in the AHL with Rockford in 07-08, picking up 8 goals and 11 assists in just 29 games of work. Barker played for Texas Stars head coach Willie Desjardins in Medicine Hat of the WHL, winning a WHL Championship in 03-04. That may be the connection that got him to Austin.

The tryout throws a bit of a wrench in the works. If Barker stays, which I would have to think he does, that means Labrie and Coyle are both going to Idaho. There are some questions about his performance in the NHL from those in Edmonton. However, the NHL and AHL are different games so this could be a solid addition.

Other tryouts include several expected to go to Idaho this year: Andrew Carroll, Jacob Cepis, and Matt Case. Tryouts otherwise include Austin Fyten, Scott Howes, Taylor Vause, and Jordan Hill.

Here's the list:
Forwards: Andrew Carroll, Jacob Cepis, Alex Chiasson, Cody Eakin, Matt Fraser, Austin Fyten, Luke Gazdic, Scott Glennie, Mike Hedden, Scott Howes, Tristan King, Travis Morin, Toby Petersen, Antoine Roussel, Colton Sceviour, Austin Smith, Reilly Smith, Mathieu Tousignant, Taylor Vause, Tomas Vincour and Francis Wathier.

Defensemen: Cam Barker, Jordie Benn, Matt Case, Jace Coyle, Brenden Dillon, Maxime Fortunus, Jordan Hill, Hubert Labrie, Patrik Nemeth, Jamie Oleksiak, John Ryder and Tyler Sloan.

Goaltenders: Tyler Beskorowany, Jack Campbell, Cristopher Nilstorp and Josh Robinson.

  1. Its not only Edmonton that question his performance. Might be good for AHL but a huge NHL bust

    1. Most recently in Edmonton, I suppose. Solid AHL numbers in limited time there. I do wonder if that affected his development. We've seen it before with your Matt Niskanen types.
