After having led for most of the game, the Texas Stars fell in overtime on a Teemu Pulkkinen goal with just 0.8 seconds remaining in the extra period. Jack Campbell got the start and stopped 34 of 37 shots in 66:59 of work. Travis Morin continued his points streak, carrying it to four games with a shorthanded goal in the first period.
The Stars got started early in the first with a shorthanded goal that really took the momentum out of the 8000 plus Griffins fans in the building tonight. With Branden Troock in the box, Justin Dowling and Travis Morin broke in 2-on-1 shorthanded. Dowling's pass to Morin found the back of the net for the reigning AHL MVP's 7th goal of the year and the first shorthanded goal of the year for Texas.
The goal came on one of only five shots in the period for Texas. Despite two Stars' power play opportunities, the Griffins outshot Texas 11-5.
Early in the first, free agent signing Andy Miele scored a power play goal on a wrist shot from the right wing circle to tie the score at one. Miele comes to the Griffins after being better than a point per game player in Portland last season. He never caught on in Phoenix and now plies his trade in the Detroit system.
Miele's tying goal did not stand for long as Texas got a power play of their own three minutes later. Brendan Ranford tapped home a Greg Rallo effort for the 2-1 score. Scott Glennie picked up the second assist, his tenth points of the season and sixth in the last four games.
With time winding down, the Griffins pulled Petr Mrazek for the extra attacker and made it work. Mitch Callahan scored through traffic to tie the game at two all and send the contest to overtime, guaranteeing a point for each team.
Campbell and Mrazek traded phenomenal saves in the 4-on-4 portion of the overtime, leading to another 3-on-3 segment for the Stars. Once again, they were not successful. With just 0.8 seconds left, Teemu Pulkkinen ripped one past Campbell for the 3-2 win.
These two teams will face off again tomorrow night in Grand Rapids.

I am so glad Dalhuisen finally got to play as a Star.
ReplyDeleteHe played tonight just like he did in preseason. He made darn sure everyone stayed out of Jack's crease. If Dallas decides to keep Klingberg, I hope we get to keep Dalhuisen. He's the stay at home defenseman we need right now.
