Stars Allow Three Unanswered Third Period Goals in Loss to Marlies

The Texas Stars endured a calamitous loss in their makeup game against the Toronto Marlies on Saturday, giving up three unanswered goals in the third period in a 3-2 decision.

All was well for Texas with sixteen minutes to go in regulation and a 2-0 lead. Nick Caamano scored on a lucky play four minutes into the first period with a backhand fling that bounced off Marlies goaltender Joseph Woll’s back and into the net. Joel L’Esperance followed suit with a wraparound goal with five minutes left in the middle frame.

Stars blue chip goaltender Jake Oettinger looked every bit the future starter in Dallas as he mostly controlled the contest with 22 saves heading into the third period. It was shaping up to be a fruitless endeavor for Toronto in their rescheduled trip to Texas.

Then one, two, three--the Marlies methodically dismantled the Stars in their own building in the middle of Texas’s desperation playoff push.

Oettinger lost track of a puck underneath his shin pad near the seven and a half minute marker as Marlies winger Garrett Wilson rushed in for the put back. Rather than regroup and refocus, the Stars went on to commit three penalties, one a fighting major given to Dillon Heatherington after Tyler Gaudet took a run at Tanner Kero.

Defenseman Pontus Aberg, who was the best player on the ice for the Marlies, went back door for the first power play goal near the fifteen minute marker to tie the game at two. Kenny Agostino completed the Marlies comeback with his power play tally three minutes later.

The Stars emptied their net with two minutes left and nearly stuffed home a loose puck with one second on the game clock, but no review was conducted and the final result stood.

It’s really a shame because the Stars mostly controlled play throughout. Caamano, who really stood out for Texas, was flying around the ice creating several scoring chances along with Kero. The one fortunate bounce on Caamano’s goal was all they would get for their effort.

The Stars have to re-rack quickly to get ready for the Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday.
