The Texas Stars continued their winning ways a win in Loveland, giving them points in six straight, as they defeated Colorado by a 4-1 mark. It was a prototypical Texas game this season as Logan Stankoven scored a pair, including the game winner, and both were assisted by Mavrik Bourque.
Texas battled through a high-shot count first from the Eagles with some stellar saves from Matt Murray, including a stone cold kick save on a breakaway. The scoring got started in the second, however, as Riley Damiani found the net and collected a point for the sixth straight game. It was something of a turnaround jumper from the slot for the fourth-year forward, putting Texas up 1-0 after two periods.
Just under two minutes into the third, it looked like Texas had extended its lead to two when Antonio Stranges rang one off the post on the follow-through of a 2-on-1 with Stankoven. The light went off but it was no goal.
Colorado fought back with a goal a few shifts later. Cédric Paré snapped one from the slot with Murray screened by his own defender.
It was then time for Texas to turn on the jets. It wouldn't be a 2023-24 Stars game without a goal from Stankoven. He did not disappoint, and neither did the setup man Bourque. who deserves as much credit for the goal as Stankoven. Bourque slipped the pass through three Eagles to the left-wing dot for the one-timer by Stankoven and the 2-1 lead.
A failed clear from Colorado gave Texas the insurance goal as the initial keep led to Nick Caamano's fifth of the year. Stankoven got some time on the ice at 6-on-5 as Colorado went for the early pull and earned the reward of an empty-net tally to mark his 12th of the season.
These two teams rerack Saturday for the rematch.
