The Dallas Stars announced today that they have signed defenseman Alex Petrovic on a two-year, two-way deal. Petrovic, who was a pending unrestricted free agent, has been with Texas since the 2021-22 season.
Petrovic got limited opportunities in Dallas, mostly playing in the AHL with Texas, until the 2024 postseason. The vet defender slotted in as the sixth defenseman for Dallas over seven games, including all of the games against Edmonton.
At the time, speaking with Gavin Spittle and Sean Shapiro on the Spits and Suds podcast, I argued that Petrovic had made himself a significant chunk of money with his play in the NHL playoffs. There was open speculation that he could secure a one-way deal with some other team in the league. However, he managed to get a deal done that gives him and his young family security of place for the coming two years. Numbers are not yet available, but I would speculate that he took a lower NHL salary than he would have on the open market to achieve a two-year deal and know where he'll be for the coming two seasons.
Here's the release:
Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed defenseman Alexander Petrovic to a two-year, two-way contract. The contract will begin in the 2024-25 season.
Petrovic, 32, appeared in one regular-season contest for Dallas during the 2023-24 campaign and recorded two shots on goal. He also registered four shots on goal in seven games during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Edmonton, Alberta native spent most of the season with the Texas Stars, Dallas' development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he collected 22 points (5-17—22) in 70 regular-season games and added one goal (1-0—1) in seven Calder Cup Playoff contests.
The 6-foot-5, 208-pound blueliner was originally selected by Florida in the second round (36th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft and signed with Dallas as a free agent on July 28, 2021.
