Looking to remain undefeated on the road, the Texas Stars erased a two-goal deficit entering the third period to defeat the Tucson Roadrunners 4-3 at Tucson Convention Center Arena. After a hard fought come-from-behind victory the night before, the Stars again showed that they are a team with resiliency, having outshot the home team 20-2 in the third period.
Alex Petrovic, freshly reassigned from Dallas, proved to be the hero, scoring the game-winning goal with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation. Getting his second start of the season, Remi Poirier stopped 19 shots on the night and kept Texas within striking distance of the home team.
The first period saw the Stars jump out to a early lead when Chase Wheatcroft scored on a deflection in front of Tucson goalie Jaxson Stauber. Kyle Capobianco and Justin Hryckowian were credited with the assists, and the away team took a lead 4:08 into the first period.
It appeared that the home team tied the score six minutes later but the goal was waved off due to a early whistle. Two minutes later, Roadrunner Andrew Agozzino took a tripping penalty. However, the best scoring opportunity came from the home team when Milos Kelemen had a short-handed breakaway but was stopped by Poirier. The Stars were not as fortunate when Hunter Drew tied the score for the Tucson 1-1 at 15:28 in the first period. Shots were 15-9 in favor of Texas at the end of one.
The tie game did not last long in the second. Just 56 seconds in, Milos Kelemen took a pass from Aku Raty and scored on a backhand shot to the left of Poirier, giving Tucson their first lead of the game. Both teams settled into the game as each team traded scoring opportunities including a nice stop on a Matthew Seminoff shot at point blank range by Stauber.
The game took an unexpected turn when Tucson Defensemen Maveric Lamoureux took a high sticking penalty halfway through the second. As the penalty expired, he exited the penalty box and took a pass from Andrew Agozzino to the left of Poirier and scored on a backhand shot, pushing the home team to a 3-1 advantage. Texas outshot Tucson 25-20 through two periods.
The third period began with a Curtis McKenzie goal just as a Tucson power play expired. Christian Kyrou fired a shot from the point, and McKenzie redirected in front of the Roadrunner net. The lead was cut to 3-2 with just over two minutes played in the third period.
From that point on, it was total domination by the visiting team. The Stars sent line after line into the Roadrunners' zone, peppering Stauber and tilting the ice in their favor. Arttu Hyru scored his first goal on a rebound shot from Matěj Blümel, also assigned from Dallas today, midway through the period.
Then with 16 seconds left in regulation, Alex Petrovic scored from the blue line, assisted by Lian Bichsel and Seminoff, to take a 4-3 lead. The game ended with a Stars victory, having outshot their opponent 45-22 and only allowing two shots the entire third period.
The Texas Stars return home to face the Iowa Wild on Friday, October 25th at 7 PM at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
