It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Michael Owen, former writer for 100 Degree Hockey from 2021-2024.

Michael was always a pleasure to chat with at the rink. I always found that Michael knew ten times as many people at the H-E-B Center than I did simply because of his chatty and outgoing nature. I think I made more random connections during those three years thanks to Michael's introductions as he roamed through the arena and said hello to anyone and everyone.

After Ryan Pennington left the site to pursue his further education, I was in a coverage bind, and Michael had just reached out to the Stars about a media credential. Former Texas media man Brian Tosti connected the two of us. He described himself as "semi-retired but can't seem to stay away from the yard, field, rink, pitch, court, etc." Michael was instantly enthralled with covering the Stars and got to cover some very, very good teams. I learned a lot from Michael's more trained writing style for postgamers after his years writing wire stories.

Michael passed away at his home in Round Rock on June 26, 2025, after a long illness. He was affected by that same illness toward the end of his time working with us here and fought tooth and nail to make sure he was still present at games, even when he did not feel anything close to 100%. We will always be grateful for his friendship, his work, and his spirit and passion for the game.

Michael loved covering sports, and he loved covering hockey. His words will live on here forever.

100 Degree Hockey has made a donation to the American Liver Foundation in his memory.
