Penalty Pushes Barracuda Past Stars in Overtime, 4-3

The Texas Stars' Spotify Wrapped is looking like it will be left without many songs from the post-game victory playlist.

Home has not been the most welcoming place this season for the Stars, who own just two wins at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park so far this year. Tonight was more of the same in their final home stand against the San Jose Barracuda Saturday night.

An interference penalty committed by Texas forward Cameron Hughes just 18 seconds into the overtime period proved to be the decisive blow for the Stars. The Barracuda gained an extra man and used the advantage to punch in a power play goal to claim a 4-3 overtime victory.

“In the end, it's a close call, and the refs made the call,” Texas Stars head coach Toby Petersen said of the Hughes penalty. “I'm not going to sit here and argue with it. They do their job, and we try to execute to the best of our ability. That's the way it goes.”

It was a tough night for the referees, and the Stars did not have any luck getting the calls they wanted, especially in crunch time.

Texas led the game by one with under three minutes remaining in regulation, but a missed hand pass committed by Barracuda forward Cam Lund in the neutral zone set up his game-tying goal.

Petersen was expressive on the bench following the San Jose goal. He called the officials over to his side to point out the hand pass on the video board, but to no avail. There was still some resentment from the call in Petersen's post-game press conference.

"They said they didn't see it. What can I say to that?" Petersen said.

Before the linesperson left the bench, Petersen gestured “two” with his fingers, referring to a previous decision in the middle frame when the officials kept San Jose's second goal on the board following a lengthy review for a kicking motion.

The Stars were able to kill off the Barracuda’s three previous power play attempts in regulation. Texas found some success on their fourth penalty kill opportunity, despite the tough 4-on-3 overtime power play they faced.

Texas forward Arttu Hyry was able to break out during the kill, collecting the loose puck after a wide Barracuda shot. Hyry battled off a pair of San Jose skaters, who were tailing him the length of the ice.

“He was close there… He'd been getting a lot of ice time in the third period, and the fact that he was able to turn on the jets and keep the defenders behind him was impressive,” Petersen said.

Hyry ran out of gas as he tried to line up his shot with San Jose goaltender Jakub Skarek, ultimately missing his shot wide on Texas' only scoring chance in the overtime period.

San Jose scored the power play game-winning goal on the following offensive possession to seal the away sweep over Texas.

Many Stars players were visibly upset after the loss. Stars goaltender Remi Poirier seemed the most frustrated, slamming his stick before entering the tunnel to his locker room. Poirier was impressive, stopping 30 of 34 shots he faced tonight.

“Remi’s has kept us in a lot of games, at times, we probably didn't have any business being in,” Petersen said. “He's doing his part.”

Texas will remain at home to face the Milwaukee Admirals this Friday at 7:00 P.M. at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
