Surprise Move: Dallas Recalls G Jack Campbell and Assigns Richard Bachman

Ready for the NHL? Maybe. (Credit: Josh Rasmussen/Texas Stars)
Jack Campbell wasn't supposed to be recalled to Dallas this season. The rookie tender was supposed to spend the season in Texas, playing his first season splitting time with Cris Nilstorp. It looks now like, thanks to an injury to Nilstorp and subpar play from Richard Bachman, Campbell will sit the bench in Dallas and may actually play. The Stars have a back-to-back on Wednesday and Thursday.

I'm not sure that he's ready for it personally, but this is how the cards are being dealt for the organization. Dallas needs better backup goaltending and they're going to give their 'goalie of the future' a shot at spelling Kari Lehtonen.

Meanwhile in Texas, Richard Bachman will get the assignment. I think it's likely that Texas plays Bachman tonight. Coach Desjardins has shown no confidence in Tyler Beskorowany this season as he has gotten no ice time.

Things just got really interesting in net for the Dallas organization

Here's the release:
The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has recalled goaltender Jack Campbell and assigned goaltender Richard Bachman to the Texas Stars, Dallas’ development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). The club also placed forward Ryan Garbutt on injured reserve with a hand injury, retroactive to March 14.

Campbell, 21, has skated in 32 games for Texas this season and has a 14-10-3 record with a .906 save percentage (SV%) and a 2.59 goals-against average (GAA). The Port Huron, Mich., native was Dallas’ first-round selection (11th overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to beginning his professional career, Campbell represented Team USA at three consecutive IIHF World U-20 Championships (2010-12), capturing a gold medal in 2010 and a bronze medal in 2011.

Bachman, 25, has played in seven games this season with Dallas, recording a 2-3-0 record with a .838 SV% and a 4.27 GAA. The Salt Lake City native has appeared in 26 career NHL contests, posting a 10-8-1 record with a .894 SV%, a 3.13 GAA and one shutout. He was Dallas’ fourth-round selection (120th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Additionally, the club has placed forward Ryan Garbutt on injured reserve, retroactive to the game against the Anaheim Ducks on March 14. The 6-0, 190-pound forward from Winnipeg has appeared in 43 career NHL games (all with Dallas) recording five goals and three assists with 42 penalty minutes.

  1. Well with beskos record I. Texas last year, I can't blame, coach Willie. Guess time will answer the questions of this move.

  2. Hey all, this is Steve. We sit right behind our goal. Anyhow, I counted the days until Jack made it here, and it has been a slightly slow process. This could be a double edged sword, if he plays and it doesn't go well his confidence will suffer. He will be the No 1 goalie in this organization, but is he going up too soon.

  3. Not playing well during a Lehtonen injury and as his backup is what got Raycroft sent down last year, and now he plays in Italy. Bachman's contract is up after this season. Just saying...
