The Texas Stars looked like they had regained some momentum Wednesday night after a tough weekend series with a come-from-behind win, and on Friday night they let that momentum carry them to a 5-2 win in their rematch against the Milwaukee Admirals at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
Matthew Seminoff scored his third goal of the two-game set against the Admirals in the win and added to his team-leading 15 goals. Meanwhile, Arno Tiefensee made 28 saves to record his seventh win of the season.
Earlier in the evening it looked as if the Admirals were the team with the momentum as they came out firing on all cylinders after the loss on Wednesday. Led by the line of Reid Schaefer, Matthew Wood, and Fedor Svechkov, who were all assigned to Milwaukee from the Nashville Predators to keep fresh during the Olympic break, the Admirals dominated the early parts of the game.
A little over two minutes into the first period Schaefer put Milwaukee on top when he batted a loose puck out of the air and past Tiefensee to make it 1-0.
The Stars would settle into the match, though, and at 8:56 of the first period Tommy Bergsland would tie it for Texas at one. The goal was Bergsland’s first of his AHL career. With the momentum back on the Stars’ side, Seminoff would score early in the second period to give Texas the 2-1 lead.
The Admirals experienced second line would strike back though with a goal from Svechkov to tie the game again.
Not to be out done, the Stars fourth line would get the better of the Admirals skill line when they forced a turnover from Wood and broke out into a perfectly executed rush that ended with a wide open shot for Sean Chisholm to put the Stars back up on top 3-2.
That set the table for Cameron Hughes to score the best goal of the night when he broke into the Milwaukee zone with speed, deked around Kevin Gravel and placed a pin-perfect shot to make it 4-2 and put the game out of reach at 3:23 of the third period.
Arttu Hyry would add an empty-netter, his first goal since returning from injury, to make it 5-2 and complete the two-game set with the Admirals in a sweep.
The Stars, now third place in the Central Division, will close out their midwest road trip with a visit to the second place Chicago Wolves tomorrow night.
